80-Year-Old Texas Man Embraces Online Learning
January 2nd, 2013

WGU TexasLearning online isn’t holding back any age from learning, and we think that’s incredible!

The New York Times recently shared the heartwarming story of 80-year-old Robert Titus, who lives in Houston and recently earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing management online.

The paper reported the Titus earned his degree from WGU Texas, as one of the members of the nonprofit online university’s inaugural class (you can see them to the right). Texas Gov. Rick Perry – you may remember him and his recent presidential campaign – created the school.

He is one of more than 440 Texas residents who have earned their degree since August 2011 from WGU Texas, created through a partnership with nationally recognized Western Governors University and designed to meet the learning needs of working adults. More than 3,000 acre enrolled in the school, which costs less than $6,000 a year and has more than 50 accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Titus, who dropped out of college after his freshman year to join the service, told the paper:

“I promised my mother many, many years ago that I would get my degree. To me, it was a major, big, big, huge accomplishment.”

Even though Titus told the paper that he still types on one finger, he was able to complete his degree online. He’s a great example of how you don’t have to be a tech wiz to learn online – you just need the motivation to earn your degree.

No matter you’re age, if you’re considering pursuing your degree online, here’s something to consider: Titus pointed out that a disadvantage of online learning is that you don’t meet many people. He looked forward to checking in with a school-assigned mentor.

If you are concerned about not having a connection with students by learning online, ask the school or program you’re applying to about the possibility of receiving a mentor. Their answer may help you determine if that’s the program for you.

We look forward to celebrating your success in education, just like we are with Robert Titus!
