The Big Business of Back-to-School

the big bucks of back-to-schoolIf you’ve ever doubted what a big business back-to-school has become, consider the fact that retailers have begun their back-to-school push in June – before some students are even out of school!

“In seven and a half years, I’ve never once seen so much emphasis put on back-to-school before July 4,” National Retail Federation (NRF) spokeswoman Kathy Grannis told Advertising Age this summer.

It’s no surprise why – according to NRF’s 2013 Back-to-School Spending Survey, combined back-to-school and back-to-college spending is expected to reach $72.5 billion this year, making it the second biggest season for retailers (Christmas is first).

Take a look at a few marketing extravaganzas to get a picture of just how big a business back-to-school has become.
