Alabama State University is a comprehensive regional university that focuses on offering learning and practical experiences that are designed to develop students' intellectual abilities, as well as social, moral, cultural, and ethical values. Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-as well as business, teaching, music, occupational therapy, health education, and social work accrediting organizations-the university is dedicated to continually improving and expanding. A new College of Education building is planned, along with the implementation of a distance learning Program to provide access to educational opportunities for those who cannot participate in a traditional campus experience. With an eclectic mix of Georgian-style red-brick classroom buildings and architecturally contemporary structures, Alabama State University is one of the most aesthetically beautiful campuses among Alabama colleges.

Alabama State University enrolls over 5,000 students, one-third non-Alabama residents and 11 percent minorities. The university boasts an 18 to 1 student-faculty ratio and offers 47 degree programs: 31 bachelors, 11 masters, two education specialists, and three doctoral. There are more than 70 student organizations at Alabama State University, including nine Greek organizations, and 17 honors organizations. The Alabama State University Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, SWAC, and compete at the NCAA Division 1 level. The university's newest program is a Ph.D. in microbiology. Among Alabama colleges, Alabama State University will house a lab for the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in their new state-of-the-art $7 million, three-story, 70,000-square-foot criminal justice/forensic sciences building. In 2004, Alabama State University was the nation's number one producer of African-American teachers.
