Bates College is a private, nonsectarian, selective college founded by abolitionists in 1855. Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the academic program at this Maine
liberal arts college encourages independent thinking,
research, and service learning.
Bates College offers more than 20 majors and 10 interdisciplinary programs in the
humanities, languages, social sciences, natural sciences, and music. Most students complete a Senior Thesis prior to graduation, and all students have the opportunity to engage in one-on-one research programs with faculty. Approximately two-thirds of Bates College students
study abroad, and 40 percent participate in
internships. A month-long Short Term is offered in the spring, allowing students to take part in special on- and off-campus programs; recent offerings include landscape painting in Italy and anthropological study in Bali.
Bates College students compete for the NCAA Division III in 24 varsity sports including football, skiing, lacrosse, rowing, and squash. Students can also participate in more than 90 organizations on campus, including club sports, performing arts, academic and social groups, and religious organizations.
