Black Hills state university sits on 123 acres of rolling greens in Spearfish, South Dakota. The university is barely 10 minutes from the Wyoming border, and in close driving distance to Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, Devils Tower, and Spearfish Canyon, a popular destination amongst Black Hills students for outdoor recreational activity including rock climbing, skiing, hiking, biking, and kayaking. The town of Spearfish itself boasts offers a variety of historical buildings and landmarks, restaurants, and hotels.

This liberal arts university in South Dakota offers over 80 undergraduate degree areas, including more than 50 majors, almost 40 minors, two associate degree programs, 22 pre-professional study programs, and three Master's programs. Over 100 full-time faculty members offer worldly educational and professional guidance through the College of arts and sciences, the College of Business and Technology, and the College of Education. In addition to the variety of on-campus classes and activities, Black Hills University also offers a distance learning program for remote students, which is growing rapidly.

In addition to being dedicated to quality academic leadership, Black Hills State University also encourages students to develop an appreciation for cultural diversity, and to play an active role in community service. As a result, the Corporation for National and Community Service named Black Hills to the national President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second year in a row.

Additionally, the University recently joined the Presidents Climate Commitment for the Advancement of Sustainability, the first university in South Dakota to do so. Black Hills' commitment to conservation and energy reduction is reflected in the daily activity across the campus and by the efforts of its students, faculty, and staff.
