Initially established as a black teacher's college in 1895, Bluefield
state college evolved to a four-year institution in the 1960s and recently began offering a variety of two-year technical programs to meet the demands of the local community. Through its four academic schools, Bluefield State College offers a magnitude of undergraduate
liberal arts degrees and professional programs in
business, sciences, education, social sciences, humanities, and
engineering, among others. Bluefield State College also offers the nontraditional Regents Bachelor of Arts degree, and provides working professionals and educators with continuing education opportunities.
For the seventh consecutive year, this college in West Virginia has been ranked on
U.S. News & Report's "America's Best Colleges" list. As a reflection of its continued growth, Bluefield State College enrollment has increased 4.5% in the past year to become the second fastest growing public college in West Virginia.
BSC students are high achievers: In the graduating class of 2007, every radiology technology students passed their qualifying examinations. Engineering and computer sciences students have worked with local community organization and members to develop computer software for the community's businesses including Mercer County Food Pantry, Bluefield Union Mission, and Mercer County Humane Society.
Through its variety of academic programs, Bluefield State College graduates over 350 students annually. Many return to BSC to enhance their professional careers through Bluefield State College's continuing education and professional studies programs.
Current BSC students enjoy a variety of academic resources as well as social activities including athletics, events, and multicultural activities and student organizations both on campus and off. Despite its growing success, Bluefield State College has maintained the lowest tuition of all public four-year colleges and universities within the region. While most universities are increasing tuition, BSC recently reduced tuition by more than $2,000.

Bluefield State College criminal investigation students recently won first and second place at a mock crime scene investigation competition.
Bluefield State College has created two new arts programs: the "Blue Chicory Players," a group of talented BSC students who present two three-act plays a year; and the BSC Jazz Ensemble, whose talented students present bi-annual music concerts.
