Bowdoin College is an independent, nonsectarian, and coeducational liberal arts institution that was founded in 1794. At Bowdoin College these undergraduate students work toward Bachelor of Arts degrees in one of over 40 departmental and interdisciplinary majors. Bowdoin College enrolls more than 1,700 students from across the country and around the world.

The polar bear first became the College mascot in 1913. As noted in the January 21, 1913 edition of The Bowdoin Orient (Bowdoin's student newspaper), the polar bear was selected as Bowdoin's official mascot in recognition of the exploration of the polar region by Bowdoin alumni Thomas H. Hubbard of the Class of 1857, Robert E. Peary of the Class of 1877, and Donald B. MacMillan of the Class of 1898.

Bowdoin College offers resources both on and off campus. The Coastal Studies Center on nearby Orr's Island is a prime example. It features a seawater marine laboratory, a solar-powered terrestrial laboratory, and other facilities that allow for research in archaeology, ornithology, ecology, geology, and history. Its great natural beauty attracts photography students and painters, as well.

Bowdoin College is an undergraduate Maine School that has more than 40 majors and over 35 minors to choose from. For this reason Bowdoin College offers its students a lot of choices.
