As an alternative non-profit , independent
College in Vermont, Burlington College is a community-based, academically challenging institution with a strong emphasis on the individual and community service. Small class sizes, integrative academic programs, and a multidisciplinary approach to
education make Burlington a very unique place. It was originally founded with only a handful of students, and grew exponentially to receive accreditation in 1982. Since then, Burlington College has been a leading independent college in Vermont.
Also unique to Burlington College is its process of evaluating students. This college in Vermont doesn't use a grading system but instead a system of evaluation based on mutually agreed upon goals between each individual student and their professor. Instead of final exams, students and teachers both assess the student's progress toward agreed-upon academic and personal goals at the end of each semester. The system reflects Burlington College's roots in liberal education, and their emphasis on a more equalized system of learning and teaching. It also encourages students to structure their own education, optimizing their educational experience.
Among traditional areas of study, Burlington College offers a range of different majors, including transpersonal psychology, and inter-
American studies. No matter a student's concentration, community service is an integral part of an education at Burlington College. The college founded the Institute for Civic Engagement in 2005 to further engage its message of community and social service. In addition to lectures and discussions from distinguished professionals, the Institute serves as a platform for social and political change for the entire community.
In an appeal to the local community's working professionals, Burlington College recently developed The Independent Degree Program (IDP), designed to offer students an accelerated program in a focused academic area.
