The Catholic university of America, a thriving center of scholarship and academic life, is unique as the national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education institution founded by the U.S. bishops. Established in 1887 as a graduate and research center, the university began offering undergraduate education in 1904. Private and coeducational, Catholic university has 11 schools and Metropolitan College. The 11 schools offer Doctor of Philosophy degrees or appropriate professional degrees. Undergraduate degrees are awarded by seven schools -- architecture and planning, arts and sciences, engineering, music, nursing, philosophy, and social service.

  • The university's Washington, D.C., location provides many opportunities for internships. Placements for credit and experience can be arranged at private and public agencies, political organizations and congressional offices.

  • Catholic University's Cardinals compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Capital Athletic Conference. The football team competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The university fields numerous intercollegiate teams.
  • CUA's Office of Campus Ministry offers many venues for spiritual devotion and growth, including daily Mass, nightly rosary, weekly eucharistic adoration and 10 student-run retreats each year that enable students of all religious traditions and of all levels of spirituality to deepen their faith.
  • Campus Ministry provides many opportunities for community service in the Washington, D.C., area, in other parts of the United States and abroad. Students volunteer with organizations such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, Habitat for Humanity and Saint Ann's Infant and Maternity Home.
  • Undergraduate- and graduate-level courses are offered over the summer to high school, undergraduate and graduate students to give them an opportunity to advance in their academic programs.
