Through three colleges--The College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of business and Industry Academic--Central State University offers majors ranging from English and journalism to finance, hospitality management, criminal justice, and gerontology. In addition to licensure programs in various education subjects, Central State University also offers a Master's degree in education. This University in Ohio has a strong teacher training program at the undergraduate, graduate, and licensure level and the school's Institute for Urban Education is Central State University's center for teacher training and education. The goal of the institution is to train urban teachers and prepare them to work in multicultural environments. The program is run by upper-class Central College University students, providing first hand advice and experience to potential new students.

Similarly, Central State University runs a program called Upward Bound, which provides preparation for high school students that are potential Central State University students. The program functions as a bridge program to prepare students academically and personally to transition to college.

For those students wishing to attend Central State University part-time or pursue professional development and degrees can take relevant and challenging courses at the college's smaller campus in Dayton. The additional campus allows more students across the state to have access to Central State University.

More than just an academic center of excellence and growth, Central State University is home to many very successful extracurricular groups and teams. The university's chorus group has been twice nominated for a Grammy, and the school's marching band has performed a number of times at national events.
