Dean Institute of Technology was established in 1947 and was known as West Penn Tech. Originally located in downtown Pittsburgh, Dean Institute moved to its current location in 1969. The school has more than 60 years of experience in providing technical education and offers technology training leading to a diploma or occupational associate degree.

Dean Institute of Technology's courses of study include heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology (HVAC);,building maintenance, electrical technology, and combination welding. The HVAC program prepares students for entry level careers in domestic, commercial, and industrial refrigeration as well as give them the necessary skills to become service technician in the areas of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. This program also has an evening program catered to the working student. It's an intensive and can be completed in 45 weeks.

The building maintenance program is 30 weeks and trains students in a variety of trades including carpentry, plumbing, electricity, painting, welding and masonry. Students gain hands-on training and learn the importance of clean up, including building cleaning procedures. Students in the electrical technician program learn blueprint reading layout, assembly, installation, testing of electrical components, and programmable control. The program can be taken in the day for 60 weeks or at night for 120 weeks.

The combination welding program instructs students in operating oxyacetylene, electric and gasoline welders, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and plasma cutting equipment. Students also learn proper rod selection for the job and to weld in all positions as well as pipe stock. The program is a combination of shop and theory. The day class program can be completed in 30 weeks, night class program in 60 weeks, and the program confers a diploma.
