Delaware Academy of Medicine is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1930, by a group of 16 local physicians and dentists to promote interest in medicine, science, literature, and educational activities. The organization serves the Delaware medical community by providing a meeting place and extensive medical library services as well as offering financial assistance to medical and dental students. Delaware academy also serves the general public by offering health information resources.

Delaware Academy of Medicine programs include the Consumer Health Information System of Delaware, Delaware Medical Information Resource Alliance, and Tel Med, a free automated telephone system of recorded health messages in English and Spanish. The academy's initiatives include hospital initiatives, consumer health libraries, collaborative initiatives with state government, medical information disparity reduction, consumer health education forums, physician education forums, financial aid programs for medical and dental students, and archives and history collection.

  • Professional research services are also available for members at Delaware Academy of Medicine. They can call, fax, or email for fast, personalized medical research. The academy sponsors lectures and seminars on topics that interest physicians, dentists, and Allied Health professionals.


  • The Delaware Academy of Medicine received the 2008 Library of the Year Award for its support of and achievement in delivering medical library services to staff and patrons of Delaware's medical and public libraries.


  • Delaware Academy of Medicine funds consumer health information services at all public libraries and provides clinical information services to community hospitals and the Division of Public Health through the Delaware Medical Information Resource Alliance (DelMIRA). The academy also maintains and operates GoLocal Database, a resource for local health agencies and support groups.


  • Recalled to Health was created by Dr. Tim Hennessy, MD, a member on the Board of Directors of Delaware Academy of Medicine. Recalled to Health has several sets of links that would interest consumer and health care professionals, and has a bi-monthly newsletter.
