The Evergreen state college in Olympia, Washington, is a progressive, public, liberal arts and sciences college. Evergreen State College is a leader in developing innovative interdisciplinary, collaborative, and team-taught academic programs and has an undergraduate program, a graduate program, and seven public service centers.

Evergreen's unique approach to learning enables students to participate in interdisciplinary programs that focus on more than just one subject area at a time. Believing that all learning is connected, Evergreen State College does not section education into traditional academic disciplines such as mathematics, English, and biology. Students enroll in a comprehensive program instead of a series of separate courses, enabling them to explore many aspects of a topic through different academic subjects.

Evergreen State College requires students to actively participate in their own education through learning contracts. Learning contracts between individual faculty members and students empower students to create their own course of study.

Instead of passively receiving information in a large lecture hall, Evergreen State College students discuss ideas in seminars, write about ideas in collaborative and individual assignments, explain ideas in presentations, and practice applying ideas in laboratories and workshops.

Evergreen State College does not give grades to measure a student's success. Rather, students meet with professors for a narrative evaluation to review their learning and how it will help them succeed in the workforce or continued studies.
