With a history that dates back to 1854, with the creation of the apostolic college Mission Santa Barbara, Franciscan School of Theology is a four-year institution dedicated to the liberal arts, and theology in particular. A Roman Catholic graduate school, Franciscan School of Theology is the only Franciscan seminary/theology school in the nation whose mission it is to aid and prepare students to serve the Church as professional ministers, Franciscan School of Theology is a center of learning for religious and laymen and women.

Available programs at Franciscan School of Theology include the Master of Arts degree, which prepares students for doctoral and teaching and studies; Master of Arts in Ministry for a Multicultural Church two-year professional degree; Master of Theological Studies two-year academic degree; Master of Divinity four-year professional degree; and the continuing education program. Franciscan School of Theology's continuing education program gives students the chance to concentrate on Franciscan topics in spirituality, history, and theology.
