Franklin & Marshall College in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a private, residential college dedicated to excellence in undergraduate liberal
education. Students construct their education by selecting courses in each of the three parts that compose the F&M curriculum: General Education, the Major, and Electives.
On June 6, 1787, with a contribution from Benjamin Franklin,
Franklin College was born. More than 40 years later, Marshall College -- named upon the death of Chief Justice John Marshall -- began to take shape. In 1853, Franklin and Marshall united to become a single college, based in Lancaster. James Buchanan, four years shy of becoming the 15th president of the
United States, was named president of the first Franklin & Marshall board of trustees.
Lancaster County -- Pennsylvania Dutch Country -- is known for its lush, rolling farmland, charming historic districts, and historical landmarks. Twenty-three acres of the Franklin & Marshall campus were named a National Historic District.
Franklin & Marshall College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
