The Area Vocational/technical school concept led to the original creation of Hawkeye community college. Hawkeye has grown tremendously in the past few decades into a comprehensive Community College offering two-year degrees, certificates and diplomas in continuing education programs as well as countless non-credit courses for personal and professional enrichment. Students can find courses in all of the programs at Hawkeye taught on campus, online, over the statewide fiber optics Iowa Communications Network (ICN) and over Iowa Public Television (IPTV).

Learning Community programs were established at Hawkeye Community College to help students adjust to life at Hawkeye and experience success. The communities create smaller groups of students and faculty within the larger college context, providing for more individualized attention close connections to others at Hawkeye. Wings, Tomorrow's Teachers in Action Today (TTACT), and Classmates/Paired Classes are the current Learning Communities on campus.

Hawkeye Community College is committed to helping all students reach their individual goals. Because of the diverse student population at Hawkeye, the needs and wants of the student body are varied. Career/technical students, transfer students, continuing education students, returning adult students, and high school students are all able to find courses and programs that suit their academic aspirations. Hawkeye Community College continues to remain an inclusive community of lifelong learners, constantly evolving to meet the needs of a global society.
