Vancouver's Icon photography School is an online photography school that teaches students how to improve the quality of their digital photos. Icon is particularly geared toward amateur students who have become interested in digital photography, but are struggling to produce high-quality photos on their own. Icon Photography School teaches students how to improve their picture-taking skills and create aesthetically pleasing artwork.

Students of any age are welcome to sign up for a class at Icon Photography School, and no previous experience or education is required. Geographic location is no limitation, and students can take classes from all over the world, as long as they have access to a computer and the Internet. After signing up, Icon students download the digital course materials and begin their studies. All courses take about two weeks to complete, and can be started at any time. Classes are divided into 14 lessons, each of which takes about one day to finish. Topics include photography masters, color and color theory, using a camera's automatic settings, portraiture, abstract photography, basic photography composition, lighting, black and white photography, digital darkroom, lenses and filters and creating a photography portfolio. After completing each lesson, Icon students take a quiz that is instantly graded and also complete an assignment that helps them put ideas from the lesson into practice. Assignments are graded and critiqued by Icon Photography School instructors.

As students reach the end of the course at Icon Photography School, they are encouraged to put together both online and offline portfolios. The portfolio may be used to help secure a job or pursue gallery exhibition opportunities. In addition, an Icon Photography School instructor will review each student's portfolio and select an image to be included in the school's online photography magazine. This boutique magazine publishes work by both students and non-students and caters to artists from around the world. Students also take an online final exam after they have completed all other course assignments. Those who score over 80 percent on the test graduate with honors, and all students who finish the course are mailed a certificate of completion from Icon Photography School.
