Jackson State University is a historically Black, co-educational, research-intensive, public institution of higher learning that has been designated by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning as the "urban university" among Mississippi Colleges. Jackson State University is proud of its heritage, is committed to its future as a diversified, urban institution, and is dedicated to developing individual students and solving urban problems.

Jackson State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the bachelor's, master's education specialist, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Jackson State University has seven undergraduate academic schools: Allied Health Sciences, business, Education, engineering, liberal arts, Science and Technology, and Social Work.

The Division of Undergraduate Studies provides a comprehensive academic support program for all incoming freshmen and transfer students. The W. E. B. DuBois Honors College offers excellent academic training and stimulating challenges to academically outstanding students and offers its members an enriched curriculum, smaller classes, and prestige.

Students organizations are a vital entity at Jackson State University. Each organization provides and promotes leadership development, community service, and school spirit. Each year, active organizations sponsor various activities such as seminars, lecture series, social and cultural events.
