Kern Community College District serves several counties in California through a variety of schools. Headquartered in Bakersfield, Kern
community college District serves the counties of parts of Kern, Tulare, Inyo, Mono, and San Bernardino counties. The schools within the Kern Community College District include
Bakersfield College, Cerro Coso College and
Porterville College. Founded in 1968, Kern Community College District is one of the largest community college districts in the country with over 24,000 square miles, serving over 26,000 students. Kern Community College District is a member of the
California Community College System.
Although Kern Community College District was brought together in 196, the various colleges have been serving their communities for much longer. Bakersfield College was founded in 1913; Cerro Coso College in 1951 (previously known as another college) and Porterville College since 1927. Additionally, Kern Community College District operates education centers and sites in Delano, downtown Bakersfield, the Mammoth/ Bishop area, Edwards Air Force, and the Kern River Valley. A variety of distance learning programs provides additional opportunities for students.
The three colleges offer a variety of programs for students wishing to earn an Associate in Arts degree, an Associate in Science degree or a certificate in dozens of subjects in the fields of technology, science, the arts, and humanities. Prospective students wishing to enroll in schools through the Kern Community College District must have a
high school diploma or GED for all of the Associate degree programs and most of the certificate and diploma programs; and must has SAT or ACT scores. Students who have attended other colleges or universities must also provide a transcript from those schools.
