In 2006, Lakehead University was named Canada's Research University of the Year in the undergraduate category by Research Infosource. The university hosts or collaborates on a various research projects and has a world class Paleo-DNA laboratory, which is a pioneer in the field of forensic ancient DNA analysis.

The institution is also known for its acclaimed multi-disciplinary programs, including aboriginal studies, gerontology, women's studies, and applied bio-molecular science. Through Lakehead's unique engineering program students can partake in a traditional Baccalaureate program and earn a diploma in engineering technology with a Bachelor of engineering degree, all in four years.
