In 2006, Lakehead University was named Canada's Research University of the Year in the undergraduate category by Research Infosource. The university hosts or collaborates on a various research projects and has a world class Paleo-DNA laboratory, which is a pioneer in the field of forensic ancient DNA analysis.

The institution is also known for its acclaimed multi-disciplinary programs, including aboriginal studies, gerontology, women's studies, and applied bio-molecular science. Through Lakehead's unique engineering program students can partake in a traditional Baccalaureate program and earn a diploma in engineering technology with a Bachelor of engineering degree, all in four years.

Lakehead University and Laurentian University are home to the dual-campus Northern Ontario school of medicine, a school founded in 2005 to focus on rural, northern, and Aboriginal health.

The university hosts or collaborates on a various research projects, including the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs, Food Security Research and Service Exchange Network, the Institute for Cancer Research and the Molecular Medicine Research Centre.

Lakehead has an Advanced Technology and Academic Centre featuring 16 technologically-enhanced classrooms, GIS labs, a virtual-reality lab, high-performance computing labs and videoconferencing capabilities.

With more than 775 Aboriginal students, Lakehead has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments at any Canadian university, and offers academic and support programs geared to their needs.
