Founded as Williamston Female College in 1872, Lander University is now a coeducational, public university. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Lander University is part of the South Carolina state system of higher education.

Lander University offers more than 80 programs in liberal arts, sciences, and pre-professional studies in business, education, and nursing. At the graduate level, Lander University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching in art education and a Master of Education in Montessori education. A variety of courses are available online, and three programs can be completed entirely online: a healthcare certificate program, a bachelor's degree in criminal justice management, and an R.N. to B.S.N. completion program.

Lander University is an NCAA Division II school with six women's teams and five men's teams, including a men's tennis team that has won a dozen championships. Students can also compete in club sports and intramurals such as kickball and innertube water polo. Lander University offers more than 60 student organizations including academic clubs, professional organizations, performance groups, and athletics.
