Landing School, established in 1978, is a nonprofit, post-secondary institution dedicated to providing hands-on education that prepares students for careers in the marine industry. Located in rural Arundel, Maine, Landing's facilities include a spacious, contemporary building in a residential area and a boatbuilding shop, design studio, systems laboratory, composites shop, classrooms, library, student lounge and administrative offices.

Students may choose from 10-month, full-time programs that include boatbuilding, yacht design, marine systems and composites. Occasional cross-program teaching sessions allow students the opportunity to receive instruction in alternate school programs.

Graduates of Landing School's programs are actively employed in the marine-industry worldwide as professional designers, builders, systems technicians, crewmembers and repairers. Some graduates enter related fields such as sailmaking, SPAR design, marine surveying and yacht sales. Many start their own shops and design offices.

  • In 1987 the Landing School became the first school of its type to be accredited by The Accrediting Commission of career schools and Colleges of technology.

  • The Landing is a short stretch of the Kennebunk River where Landing School is located. Between 1766 and 1867, it was an internationally famous shipbuilding area and the home of more than 20 shipbuilding firms.

  • Math skills are important for students enrolled in the Yacht Design Program. Entering students must demonstrate proficiency in second-level high school algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

  • Students who miss more than 10 percent or 20 days of school for any reason may be dismissed.
