The Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) School of Nursing has been training students to enter the
health care field for nearly 100 years. The 33-month diploma program prepares students for positions as professional nurses. References, SAT scores, health records and a
high school diploma are all required for admission at LGH. Students at learn through both in-class and clinical experiences in obstetrics, pediactrics, medical/surgical and psychiatric nursing.
LGH School of Nursing is situated next door to Lynchburg General Hospital, where students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experiences that prepare them for their future career. Lynchburg General Hospital specializes in emergency and critical care services, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and cardiology. Students may also train at Virginia Baptist Hospital, which focuses on outpatient treatment, women's and children's services, mental health, and chemical dependency treatment. The goal of LGH School of nursing to prepare students to practice as registered nurses (RNs) after they have passed the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses.
First-year students at LGH School of Nursing enroll in basic nursing courses and also take classes at
Central Virginia Community College in subjects like biology and behavioral sciences. During the second and third years of study, Lynchburg General students enroll in specialized nursing courses. Introductory classes include principles of sociology, principles of nutrition and fundamentals of nursing. Advanced course include nursing care of adults, nursing care of children, history and trends in nursing, and nursing leadership in the
health care system. An advanced placement program is offered for LPNs. Financial aid, including Federal Family Education Loans and Pell Grants, may be available to qualified students. Virginia residents may also be candidates for the Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship. LGH School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
