Marine Corps University was founded in 1989 by General Alfred M. Gray of the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps University's schools have a longer history, which began in 1891 with 29 officers attending the School of Application. The Marine Corps University's mission is to develop students' professional military careers through education and training that prepares them to be leaders.

Marine Corps University students can attain degrees from the Marine Corps War College, Command and Staff College, School of Advanced Warfighting, Compliance Certification and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). MCU's Schools and Programs also include the Professional Development Division, Lejeun Leadership Institute, Expeditionary Warfare School, School of MAGTF Logistics, Senior Leader Development Program, Commanders Programs, and Enlisted PME (EPME).

Through technology many of the books are available as books on tape or CD and downloadable as audio files.


  • The Senior Leader Development Program began in 2003 to provide professional growth and assignment strategy for general officers and senior executive staff. The program seeks to expand executive leadership skills in addition to strategic and operational aspects during conflict.


  • The LeJeune Leadership Institute's mission is to supply advance study and practice of leadership throughout the Marine Corps.


  • Marine Corps University has a Commanders Program and Spouse's Workshop. The Commanders program is held twice a year and is required for all colonels and lieutenant colonels expected to command. The Spouse's Workshop places emphasis on "leading team building."
