Hill College was founded by 23 families of pioneer settlers in the area and is the oldest college in Western
North Carolina that, to this day, remains on its original site in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Elevated at 2,330 feet, the 194 acre campus has impressive views of the Craggies, Clingman's Peak, and Mount Pisgah.
Mars Hill College merges the old and the new -- from the traditional and modern architecture on campus to the combination of traditional and contemporary elements reflected in their programs. The college emphasizes a strong, broad
liberal arts education with a three part
liberal arts curriculum: Liberal Arts in Action (LAA), in which students examine human questions such as Who are you?; What is human nature?; and How do societies work?; a major providing in depth knowledge of a particular field; and LAA Connectors as well as electives that help students learn a variety of subjects. The college offers the five following degrees: B.A., B.S., B.M., B.F.A., and B.S.W, more than 30 majors and minors and over 60 concentrations.

Mars Hill's student to teacher ratio is 16 to 1, and first year courses have an average class size of 22 students. Courses in a student's major have average class sizes of 15.
The college is a member of the South Atlantic Conference and competes at the NCAA Division II level in 19 intercollegiate sports, including men's basketball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Intramural and club sports are also available in floor hockey, flag football, ultimate frisbee, softball, basketball, water polo, volleyball, road cycling, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking, dodgeball, and disc golf.
Mars Hill College has a number of cultural and outdoor activities to enrich Undergraduate college experience. Students can get involved in more than 40 clubs and organizations on campus, including Student Activities Board, Student Government Association, Christian Student Movement, New Beginning Singers, Bailey Mountain Cloggers, and Greek organizations.
Mars Hill College offers financial assistance through federal and state awards as well as scholarships through 16 of its athletic teams and in music, theater and clogging.
The campus' Renfro Library was opened in 1996 through generous contributions from George and Donna Renfro, Mars Hill College graduates of 1975. The library's collection includes more than 85,000 volumes, 300 periodicals, 16,000 electronic periodicals, 54,000 electronic books, 2600 LP records, 360 CDs, and 178,000 microforms.
There are 10 residence halls to accomodate students seeking on campus living.
