Founded in 1889 as Mayville Normal School (Teaching College), Mayville State University is one of North Dakota's original colleges. The university began by providing general
education and four-year degrees, using them as a base to strengthen the curriculum, increase enrollment, and build new facilities to accommodate its growing student body.
Mayville State University offers majors and minors in the divisions of Biology,
business, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Early Education, Education, English, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Library Media and Information Science, Mathematics, Psychology, Science, Social Science, and Sociology. The university confers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Associate of Arts degrees. Distance-learning degrees and programs are available in
business Administration, Early Childhood, and Elementary Education.
Mayville has a number of campus resources to assist in the student's academic achievement and development, including the Byrnes-Quanbeck Library,
MSU Bookstore, and Tutoring. In the summer of 2004, the university became the first campus to issue TabletPC notebook computers to the faculty and students for use in and out of the classroom.

In fall of 2006, Mayville State University's enrollment was 832 students, 554 full-time and 278 part-time students. The student body is divided about evenly between male and female students.
Sixty-eight percent of the students are North Dakota residents, 12% are Minnesota residents, and 15% are from other states. International students account for 2% of the student body.
Mayville State University has more than 60 faculty members with more than 30 full-time faculty members. The student to faculty ratio is 15 to 1 and the average class size is 20.
Mayville State students receive an Information Technology Certificate for completing core IT classes and all classrooms, residence halls, and the library provide Internet access.
Four-year degrees that are available at Mayville State are Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of University Studies and Bachelor of Applied Science. Two-year Associate of Arts degrees are available in business Management, Secretarial Science and Early Childhood Associate.
The University is affiliated with NAIA and the Dakota Athletic Conference. Men can participate in football, basketball and baseball, and women can participate in volleyball, basketball and softball.
There are more than 12 intramural sports and 19 student organizations including choir, student government, and Student Association. The Student Activities Council sponsors events throughout the year by bringing in nationally recognized comedians, hypnotists, improv comedy troupes, and bands as well as organizing dances, student talent shows, and speakers.
Mayville State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
