Medical University of South Carolina was founded in 1834 and was one of the first medical schools in the United States. The distinguished programs at the Medical University of South Carolina are neuroscience, substance abuse, cardiovascular medicine, drug sciences, perinatal medicine, ophthalmology, hearing loss, genetics, rheumatology, and cancer care.

The Medical University of South Carolina is the home institution for the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC). The AHEC is a statewide consortium for teaching hospitals and rural health education centers. It influences the education, retention, supply and geographic allocation of health care professionals throughout the state, especially in underserved communities.

The Medical University of South Carolina provides training and education for health professionals, scientists, and other health personnel through its MUSC Medical Center and six colleges, including the College of Medicine, College of nursing, College of Graduate Studies, College of Dental Medicine, and the College of Health Professions. The South Carolina AHEC has health programs to encourage 8th through 12th graders of underrepresented groups in the medical professional to pursue careers in health care.

  • Through the development of the campus and programs, Medical University of South Carolina has had enormous growth in enrollment. The college is a 76-acre medical complex, with more than 89 buildings. Since 1985, eight buildings have been completed and other buildings are scheduled for completion over the next several years, including a Phase I Replacement Hospital with 156 beds, the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine and Clinical Education, and a Bee Street Parking Garage. The Drug Discovery Building is in the design phase and the University is anticipating the building of a Bioengineering Building in collaboration with the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.
