Meharry Medical College was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central
Tennessee college of Nashville. The Central
Tennessee college of Nashville became Walden University and, in 1915, the college separated from the university. It is the largest, private,
Historically Black College for health professionals and scientists in the
United States.
The Meharry Medical College offers degrees and majors in the
school of medicine, School of Dentistry, and the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Meharry exists to serve the
health care needs of minorities and underserved communities through educating and training students in health sciences.

Meharry Medical College has more than 200 faculty members who are nationally distinguished in health science education and clinical and basic research.
There are more than 720 students enrolled at Meharry and the student body represents 43 states, the District of Columbia ,and 22 foreign countries.
Meharry Medical College has a 26-acre campus with 20 buildings and an outdoor amphitheater that seats over 1,000.
Meharry students can participate in many student organizations and clubs including fraternities, sororities, and honor societies.
Meharry's School of Medicine is the oldest and largest of the four schools, 80 students are admitted annually, and it provides residency training in Family Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Preventative Medicine, and Psychiatry. The School of Dentistry admits 50 students each year, offers two post-doctoral programs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and General Practice Dentistry, and has been designated as one of four Regional Research Centers for Minority Oral Health.
The School of Graduate Studies and Research confers Master of Science degrees in Public Health, Ph.D degrees in Biomedical sciences of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology , and Physiology. Students can pursue a joint M.D/Ph.D degree through the School of Medicine and School of Graduate Studies.
Meharry's research emphasis is on the health concerns facing people of color, particularly African Americans. Health concerns include brain and behavior, cancer, HIV/AIDS, obesity, diabetes, and women's health.
Multi-disciplinary research programs include ARCH: Mechanisms of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Toxicity, Asthama Disparities in Cohorts at Risk for Morbidity, Cooperative Center for Research in reproduction, Center for Health Disparities Research in HIV, EXPORT Center for Health Disparities, RCMI Program in Women's Health Research, and a host of other research endeavors.
Research Centers at Meharry Medical College include the Center for AIDS Health Disparities Research, Clinical Research Center, Center for Optimal Health, Sickle Cell Center, Center for Women's Health Research, and Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience.
