Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley originated from the oldest college in the Kansas City metropolitan area and is one of the oldest Missouri community colleges. Two-year degrees in a variety of concentrations are offered at Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. There are associate degrees and certificates offered for various programs.

Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley started out as the Kansas City Polytechnic Institute, which included a junior college, school of mechanical arts, teacher training, and a school of business. In 1919, this Missouri community college was the first Two-year school in the United States to award the associate degree. With the creation of the Metropolitan Community College district, a few campuses were born, including Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley. Construction on this Missouri community college was completed in 1968 and named for the park it overlooks.

In spring 2005 Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley's student enrollment reached 6,400 and remained the most ethnically diverse of all the Metropolitan Community Colleges. The nursing and Allied Health programs at Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley are recognized throughout the Kansas City and the Midwest as centers of excellence, providing training and services that are crucial to our community.
