Mid-Plains community college, a legislatively designated 18-county district in West-Central Nebraska, is a comprehensive, open access, public, two-year Community College system that offers associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Mid-Plains Community College consists of three campuses, one located in McCook, Nebraska, and two located in North Platte, Nebraska.

The McCook campus (formerly McCook Junior College) of Mid-Plains Community College was founded in 1926 as a junior college and was the first two-year Nebraska community college. It was small at first, beginning with only eight faculty members. The McCook campus formed its own political subdivision in 1971. The North Platte campus (formerly North Platte Junior College) of Mid-Plains Community College began in 1964 when the former post office building became part of the Junior College District. Buildings were constructed and left to the school by benefactors.

The Mid-Plains Community College area was formed in 1973 from McCook Junior College, Mid-Plains Voc-Tech, and North Platte Junior College to serve the surrounding county. Today, the campuses under Mid-Plains Community College are known as McCook Community College and North Platte Community College. These Nebraska community colleges all form the entity of Mid-Plains Community College. This Mid-Plains Community College system works together through integrated student services, business systems, an area-wide academic/vocational division structure and collective marketing and recruitment efforts.
