Middlebury College is a top-tier liberal arts college founded in 1800, located in Champlain Valley of central Vermont. The college is renowned for leadership in language and international studies instruction and nationally known for programs in environmental studies. Middlebury offers more than 850 courses in over 40 majors. The largest majors, by number of graduates, are economics, psychology, English, political science, international studies, environmental studies and history.

About 40 percent of graduating seniors choose a single major in a traditional program of study, 30 percent complete a double or joint major, and another 30 percent major in one of the interdisciplinary programs offered at Middlebury College, which includes international studies, environmental studies, neuroscience, molecular biology and biochemistry or women's and gender studies. All undergraduates complete a set of degree requirements including a first year seminar with a writing intensive taught by their academic advisor, a second writing intensive, and 11 distribution and cultural and civilization courses covering pertinent areas in liberal arts.
