Since the late 1960s, Montserrat College of Art offers art-focused four year Bachelor's degrees, diplomas, and community-based programs from its location 20 miles outside of Boston. The school has nine areas of study including animation + interactive media, art education, book arts, Graphic Design, illustration, painting + drawing, photography + video, printmaking, and sculpture and a minor in art history. The school offers a basis in liberal arts and foundation with opportunities for interdisciplinary study and self-directed programs possible. As a four-year college, the art school offers on-campus housing and active residence and student life programs.

Montserrat College of Art prides itself on its intensive studio environment and one-on-one instruction from faculty which consists of accomplished artists, designers, and scholars. They offer many internships and apprenticeships as well as study abroad programs and mobility study. The campus operates the Bear Gallery, a student run art that gives students the experience of organizing and operating a professional gallery.

Montserrat was created in the late sixties by a group of artists who were working and teaching in the Boston area. They sough to create a new kind of school for professional education in the visual that focused on the arts and on the individual needs of each student. In the 1980s, Montserrat School of Visual Arts was accredited and granted the authority to award the Bachelor of fine arts degree and thus, became the Montserrat College of Art. The school is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. They offer many financial aid opportunities as well.

  • In early 1990, Montserrat outgrew its original facility and moved into a newly renovated, nineteenth century Hardie Building,in historic downtown Beverly in order to house their, expanded teaching facilities.
