Montana State University began as Northern Montana Agricultural and Manual Training. When the school received operational funding in 1929, the college opened its doors to 80 students, five faculty members, and was temporarily located in Havre high school. Montana State University-Northern moved to its current location in 1932.

Montana State University-Northern offers a wide range of programs with more than 40 majors and over 30 minors in the areas of art and sciences, education, nursing, technical sciences and graduate studies. The university confers associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees and certificate programs in automotive technology, welding technology, agricultural mechanics technology, and automotive technology: auto body and land survey technology.

Montana State University-Northern's Extended University is home to all non-traditional programs including Distance Education, Summer Session, Motorcycle Safety, Montana Environmental Training Center (METC), Cabin Fever Institute, and Learning Experience Assessment Program (LEAP).

  • Montana State University-Northern offers men's basketball, football, rodeo, and wrestling, and women's basketball, golf, rodeo, and volleyball. They have won numerous Frontier Conference Championships in men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball.
