Morris College

100 West College St.
Sumter, S.C. 29150

Morris College was established in 1908, with authorization from the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, for the "Christian and intellectual training of Negro youth." Most of its founding fathers were economically disadvantaged, and less than a century removed from American slavery, but had a strong faith in God and a dream to provide for others an education they were denied. Morris is a historically black, co-educational, liberal arts college providing personal and educational advancement to all its students.

The College began as an institution offering programs in teacher certification and theology. Today, Morris College students can pursue bachelor's degrees in the areas of art, biology, broadcast media, business administration, community health, criminal justice, early childhood education, elementary education, English, fine arts, health science, history, journalism, liberal studies, liberal/technical studies, mathematics, political science/history, recreation administration, social studies, and sociology.

Even though the college has numerous areas of study, Morris College remains true to its beginnings as an institution of learning for teaching and training ministers for pulpits and schools throughout the nation and in the state of South Carolina.
