Mountain State University is an independent not-for-profit university, founded in 1933. The college offers classroom-based education as well as independent and distance learning programs. The university is centrally located in downtown Beckley, West Virginia, 50 miles from Charleston.

The college confers associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Undergraduate programs are available in arts and sciences, Business and Technology, health sciences, non-traditional, and distance education. The School of Leadership and Development offers a B.S. in Organizational Leadership and M.S. in Strategic Leadership.

Mountain State University students can pursue graduate studies at the School of Graduate Studies in graduate interdisciplinary studies, graduate criminal justice administration, health science, nursing, physician assistant, and graduate certificate programs.

  • Mountain State University's sponsored programs and partnerships include Technology Zone, USDA, ARS, and Appalachian Visions.


  • Technology Zone began in 2002 with a congressional award of $1.5 million for educational research and development, with the goal to upgrade the technological infrastructure at Mountain State University which includes Internet access, audio/video equipment in every classroom and the auditorium, and Hogan Hall, which has cable and Internet access.


  • Technological services are also provided to local area K-12 schools, non-profit organizations, and small businesses. The USDA, ARS is a Medicinal Botanicals Program between Mountain State and the USDA. The program promotes the plant industry in West Virginia through education, research and outreach.
