The National
midwifery Institute is a Vermont based distance-learning program aimed at training and preserving the practice of midwifery. The National Midwifery Institute believes that each woman has a right to define her own support system through her pregnancy and during birth. The National Midwifery Institute focuses on prenatal, the birthing process and postnatal care.
The program at the National Midwifery Institute is broken into three parts, over a three year period: 810 hours of study on 13 modules with beginners and advanced levels; study group course work, which is the completion of 52 modules and 1,080 hours of study; and a supervised apprenticeship providing clinical experience. In the core study curriculum, students study the foundations of: anatomy and physiology, chemistry, genetics, embryology, applied microbiology, child growth and development, nutrition and required social sciences.
As the program progresses, students also study: the art and science of midwifery, including prenatal, labor and delivery, neonatal care, and postpartum care; communication skills; anatomy and physiology, genetics, obstetrics and gynecology, embryology and fetal development, neonatology, applied microbiology, chemistry, child growth and development, pharmacology, nutrition, laboratory diagnostic tests and procedures, and physical assessment; concepts in psychosocial, emotional and cultural aspects of maternal and child care, human sexuality, counseling and
teaching, maternal and infant and family bonding process, breastfeeding, family planning principles of preventative health and community health; all aspects of pregnancy; interventive skills in preventative, remedial and supportive midwifery; development of collegial relationships with
health care providers from other disciplines; and behavioral and social sciences; personal hygiene, client abuse, cultural diversity, and the legal, social and ethical aspects of midwifery; and the midwifery management process.
Students do not need to own a computer to enroll in the distance-learning program at the National Midwifery Institute. Students may instead purchase textbooks and complete their assignments by handwritten sheets. Enrollment at the National Midwifery Institute is open year around. Student may apply for an interest fee payment schedule through the National Midwifery Institute. Financial aid is not available in distance only programs.
