Established in 1994 by Douglas and Wanda Gower, the Natural Touch School of
massage therapy grounds students with
Therapeutic Massage training that emphasizes respect for others and personal integrity in addition to technical proficiency. The Greensboro site opened its doors in 1999, while the Hickory-based Natural Touch School of Esthetics and
massage therapy began offering classes in 2004.
Both locations feature a variety of course options for people with varying interests and levels of commitment: a 550-hour therapeutic massage training program; community classes; continuing education opportunities; a supervised student clinic; and professional
massage therapy. Each location offers day and evening courses. The intensive massage training program students take classes in clinical massage; somatic psychology; allied modalities; clinic sessions; Swedish massage theory and practice anatomy, physiology and pathology; and ethics, law and
business. The curriculum of the 600-hour esthetics program covers facials, spa body treatments, nutrition, reflexology, aromatherapy, skin care, anatomy and physiology, epilation, cosmetics, and
business and professional ethics.
Graduates of Natural Touch School of Massage Therapy can apply to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for certification. After passing the National Certification Exam, they can apply to the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy to become a Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist who can practice massage. In order to become licensed, prospective estheticians must take a state board exam from the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Examiners.

The average class size ranges from eight to 12 students per instructor. Bodywork courses with more than 16 students are team taught.
Graduates of the Natural Touch School of Esthetics and Massage Therapy go on to practice and salons, day and medical spas. Others become make-up artists or medical estheticians offering corrective make-up and working with dermatologists assisting with facials, extractions, microdermabrasion and more.
The professional programs can be completed in six months to one year.
