The U.S. Naval War
college was established in 1884, with the signing of General Order 325 by William E. Chandler. For more than 100 years, the
college's graduates have served in leadership positions throughout all branches of the armed forces and defense community.
The U.S. Naval War College's departments and colleges include strategy and policy, joint military operations, national security decision making, The College of Naval Warfare, and The College of Naval Command and Staff. The college also has international programs available at the Naval Staff College and Naval Command College.
The strategy and policy department provides courses to teach students to think strategically and prepare them for strategic leadership, joint military operations is a curriculum of joint warfighting at the theater-strategic and operational levels of war, the national security decision making department's curriculum educates students in effective selection and leadership of military forces within the allotted national resources.

The Advanced research Program allows selected students to participate in an advanced research project during their residency in Newport.
The Researching and Gaming departments conduct research on all war-related questions and statesmanship connected with war or the prevention of war. These departments include the Strategic Research Department, Warfare Analysis and Research Department, War Gaming Department, and the International Law Department.
The Naval War College Press publishes quarterly journals on international security, defense, and other naval issues as well as the Naval College Review, a monograph series, the Newport Paper, and books. Publications are influenced by the Naval War College Library Historical Collection.
The Naval War College Library's academic collection contains more than 250,000 items in paper format, 450,000 microfiche/card/film and 1700 periodicals, including 700 current subscriptions. The Classified Library contains more than 40,000 titles, more than 62,000 discrete items in paper form, and the library has an online catalog system containing its post-1985 records and several databases. The Naval Historical Collection is in Mahan Hall and contains more than 300 manuscripts and archival collections. The Naval War College Library also has partial Federal Depository Library. This library receives publications in paper, microform, and digital formats in support of the college's curriculum.
