New England Institute for Reflexology & Universal Studies was founded in 1997 by Valerie Voner, a certified massage therapist and reflexologist and Reiki master teacher, about a year after she established the New England Association of Reflexologists and was elected to the board of the Reflexology Association of America. Reflexology is a stress-relieving practice where pressure is applied to the feet, supposedly restoring balance to the body, releasing natural energy and helping it heal. With reflexology, massage and Reiki as the primary components of its curriculum, New England Institute for Reflexology & Universal Studies strives to complement conventional medicine and other methods of healing.

New England Institute for Reflexology & Universal Studies offers several courses of study and certification programs, including reflexology certification and advanced reflexology training, reflexology therapist training workshop, advanced reflexology courses, Reiki and other modalities and professional aromatology and aromatherapy certification. The reflexology therapist training workshop is an intensive 12-week program appropriate for beginner, intermediate and advanced practitioners. In addition to the study and ethical practice of reflexology, students learn the basics of physiology and anatomy. After completing the program and receiving a certificate, students can begin the process for National Certification through American Reflexology Certification Board or the Reflexology Certification Board.

Students complete the aromatology and aromatherapy certification program in six sessions over six months. The instructor covers topics including wholesale supplies, synergistic blending, simple synergy blending, no-fault blending, reflexology treatment oils, massage treatment oils, SPA scrubs, treatment oils and creams, and in-depth discussions of 55 therapeutic essential oils.
