Known for its small classes, high quality instruction, and postgraduate and continuing education offerings, New England School of Art & Design at
Suffolk University opened in 1923. Originally called the New England School of Art, it moved to Newbury Street and was renamed in 1975. The New England School of Art & Design now resides in a modern 43,000 square-foot building equipped with the latest classroom and educational technology and studio space.
After the New England School of Art & Design's affiliation with Suffolk University was formalized in 1988, the two schools merged and it became a department within the College of Arts and Sciences at Suffolk in 1996, offering a joint Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Graphic Design, interior design and fine arts are the focal points of the curriculum, and now students can enjoy a varied
liberal arts education along with the facilities and resources of a larger university. The graphic design track helps students to solve design problems, including analysis, concept development and drawing. The New England School of Art & Design has bachelor's, master's and part-time
certificate programs with graphic design concentrations.
There are three galleries within the New England School of Art & Design: the School or Art & Design Gallery, Project Space and White Box. Works of a diverse range of materials and subject matter created by students, faculty, alumni and artists from outside the institution are on display in the main gallery. Exhibits rotate every four to six weeks, with student work exhibited every year from March through May. Project Space is geared towards experimental artists, although sometimes exhibits on display share or complement the themes of work in the main gallery. The White Box is a smaller venue functioning as a secondary exhibition space for the main gallery.
