Nicknamed "The West Point of the West," New Mexico Military Institute is situated in Roswell, New Mexico. Founded in 1891, it is acclaimed as the only state-funded co-educational
College Preparatory high school and junior college in the country, providing about 1,000 cadets from more than 40 states and more than a dozen countries an opportunity to develop strong leadership skills, discipline and character in a demanding academic environment.
New Mexico Military Institute offers a high school diploma and two associates degrees. NMMI faculty and staff are committed to providing cadets personal attention, with 17 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio. New Mexico Military Institute received the Military Schools Brigade award, which goes to the most improved Reserve Officers Training Corps battalion, reflecting the hard work and dedication of the staff. NMMI offers cadets a chance to participate in interscholastic and intercollegiate sports, including football, baseball, basketball, track, men's soccer, tennis, swimming, golf and volleyball. A 55,000-square-foot indoor athletic facility is located on campus. Its features include a swimming pool with a 14-foot diving well and a five-lane lap pool, four racquetball courts, four basketball courts and weight room. There are also 10 acres of athletics fields, 12 tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course on campus.

New Mexico Military Institute JROTC program has won the honor school with distinction award every year since 1916.
Among other requirements, successful NMMI applicants must be under 22 years of age, never have been married, have no dependent children, be in acceptable physical condition, able to take part in athletic and leadership development activities and have no significant disciplinary problems or substance abuse issues.
Qualifying New Mexico Military Institute cadets who are New Mexico residents are eligible to receive the General Richard T. Knowles Legislative Scholarship, which amounts to approximately $3,600. The award is renewable for up to four years if requirements are met.
About 175 scholarships are available to qualifying NMMI cadets, including 112 General Richard T. Knowles Legislative Scholarships.
Cadets come from around the globe to study at NMMI, including Bosnia, Canada, Czech Republic, Fiji, Guam, Mexico, Panama, United Kingdom, Russia, Virgin Isle, China, Republic of Korea, United Arab Emirates and American Samoa.
