When New Mexico Tech opened its gates to students in 1889, it was known as the
New Mexico School of Mines. Since its founding as a mining school, New Mexico Tech has broadened its course offerings in the areas of science,
engineering and other
technical fields. About an hour from Albuquerque, New Mexico Tech is a state-funded, co-ed institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, enrolling approximately 1,800 students. Providing small classes is a priority at New Mexico Tech, where the student-to-faculty ratio is 12 to one.
New Mexico Tech is known for providing one-on-one personal attention from professors, state-of-the-art laboratory environments, substantive on-campus employment opportunities, excellent research facilities and a scenic campus. New Mexico Tech is a leader in research pertaining to hydrology, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, geophysics, homeland security, information
technology, earth sciences, energetic materials engineering and petroleum recovery.
Undergraduates can choose from more than 30 different majors, from aerospace studies and petroleum engineering to
education and
fine arts. New Mexico Tech also offers preprofessional programs, including preveterinary medicine, prephysical therapy, predmedical and prepharmacy courses.

New Mexico Tech added two geoscience facilities to campus: PASSCAL, an instrument center allowing faculty, students and reserachers to study seismology, and Earthscope, which can be used to study crustal strain, faults, earthquake processes, magma, continental structure and deep earth structure.
About 99 percent of New Mexico Tech's faculty have earned doctoral degrees.
Undergraduates living on campus have the choice of five residence halls and three apartment complexes. New Mexico Tech housing features single-sex and co-ed living situations.
Although New Mexico Tech does not field varsity athletics teams, it offers plenty of club and intramural sports, including caving, climbing, golf, martial arts, rugby, soccer, paint ball, shooting, volleyball and whitewater rafting.
