Originally founded in the late 1800s, Newcomb College was one of the first Women's colleges in the country. Founded after H. Sophie Newcomb, the college was intended to serve as a center of academic opportunity for women. In 2006, the college closed and was re-established to serve as a support institute for women and the extended community as part of Tulane University.

Since its reopening, Newcomb College has hosted over 100 events, symposiums, and cultural events. It has also successfully launched a variety of academic and co-curricular activities for Tulane University students. The college provides a number of fellowship opportunities that extends a student's learning beyond the classroom. The program also fosters faculty/student relationships by encouraging collaborative research and community improvement projects. Students are granted fellowships to in travel, independent research, the New Orleans rebuilding project, and women's issues, among others. Newcomb College has granted more than $150 million in fellowship money since the program's inception.

This Women's college in New Orleans prides itself on providing participating students with a global education. The center serves to foster students' understanding of the world and support intellectual growth. Through speaker series and symposiums, Newcomb College exposes students to intellectual scholars from around the world as well as new concepts and ideas that may not be encountered in the traditional classroom.

Newcomb College also offers a prestigious scholars program, designed for high-achieving women. The program focuses on research and the development of global concepts to better the world. The college also boasts a community relations project called Newcomb Neighbors, where students and faculty work to strengthen the relationship with the city of New Orleans.
