North Carolina A&T State University's was established in 1891, as Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negros. Today, the university is one of the leading historically black colleges, and is a top producer of African American engineers and technologists. North Carolina A&T State University is a public university in the University of North Carolina Systems.

North Carolina A&T State University confers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. There are more than 99 undergraduate programs and more than 50 master's programs and doctorate degrees in mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering, energy and environmental studies, and leadership studies. These programs are available through the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, School of business and Economics, School of Education, School of Technology, College of Engineering, School of nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies.

Four African American freshman students, the Greensboro Four, sat down and requested service at the segregated Woolworth's lunch counter on February 1, 1960. This act of civil disobedience is credited for starting the sit-in movement of the 1960's.
