North Carolina Central University was chartered in 1909, and then opened its doors as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua in 1910. The university was the country's first public liberal arts institution founded for African Americans. North Carolina Central University has a strong liberal arts tradition and strives for academic excellence.

North Carolina Central University offers baccalaureate, master's, professional, and some doctoral level degrees. North Carolina Central students can study a variety of disciplines through the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences and Technology, School of business, School of Education, School of Law, and School of Library and Information Sciences. Distance Education and evening and weekend programs are also available.

The academic enrichment camps include Legal Law Camp, Criminal Justice and CSI Leadership Camp, Senior Project Prep Camp, Senior Project Enrichment, Summer Academic Camp-Elementary Excellence, Summer Academic Camp-Middle Grades "Discovering an Identity" Summer Camp, high school Writing Enrichment, and SAT Camp. The sports activities camps include Men's Basketball Camp, Women's Basketball Camp, Women's Volleyball Camp, Cheerleading Camp, and National Youth Sports Programs.

  • Library resources are available through the James E. Shepard Memorial Library, The Music Library, The Library School of Library and Information Sciences, The Library of the School of Law, and The New School of Education. The James E. Shepard Memorial Library has more than 490,000 volumes, more than 140,000 federal and state documents, and microform, and an inventory of full-text electronic databases. The library's treasure room contains a collection of books and pamphlets on African American life and culture. The Music Library maintains a collection of instrumental and vocal music, orchestral scores, records, and a collection of books in the music field. The Law Library has more than 300,000 volumes including federal, state, and regional reports.
