Northeastern State University was founded in 1851 as the original Cherokee National Female Seminary and has two campuses located in Tahlequah and Broken Arrow. The Muskogee branch gives students a chance to take graduate and upper-level courses in industrial management, general studies, nursing, education, and business.

In 2001, the Muskogee campus celebrated the opening of The Mike Synar Center, dedicated to the former U.S. Congressman from the 2nd District of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1995. This two-story, 40,000 square foot building is home the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and students studying to earn their Master of business Administration. With state-of-the-art technology classrooms, computers and multimedia features, this is a crown jewel of the Muskogee campus.

The Office of Career Services prepares students to start their career after graduation. Serving students on all three campuses, the center gives students a chance to attend career fairs and invites different companies to come on campuses to interview students. The Office of Career Services also sponsors several training seminars and workshops for students about interviewing and the job market.

Upon graduation, the Northeastern University Alumni Association connects alumni together. The purpose of the Alumni Association is to keep graduates in touch with the school by a variety of activities, events and services. The Alumni Association has active area charters in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Graduates and former students are eligible for membership to the Association.
