About 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. The professor-to-student ratio at this Oklahoma school is kept low at 26 to 1, making it easy for students to get to know their professors.

Northeastern State University was founded in 1851 as the original Cherokee National Female seminary and now has two campuses located in Broken Arrow and Muskogee. Students can choose from 69 undergraduate degrees, 18 graduate degrees, and 13 pre-professional programs. The undergraduate colleges are the College of Business and Technology, the College of education, the College of liberal arts, and the College of Science and Health Professions.

Music lovers will appreciate Northeastern State University's Jazz Lab. The Jazz Lab was built in 1993, giving musicians, listeners, and scholars a chance to learn more about jazz. The lobby was created to look like the New Orleans' French Quarter and about 200 people can squeeze in the auditorium to hear a performance. The Jazz Studies program has two jazz ensembles and students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a major in Jazz Studies.

Joining clubs and starting new activities is encouraged by the Office of Student Affairs. Fraternities and sororities are a part of campus life, but so are a variety of student clubs and academic organizations, such as the Society for Underground Bookworms, Social Dance Society, the Native American Student Association, and the Rifle Team. The school also has its own student-run newspaper and magazine.

Northeastern State University is known as one of the top NCAA Division II schools because about 50 percent of student athletes graduate on time or earn a 3.2 GPA. Basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer, softball, and tennis are the main NCAA Division II varsity sports. Any student can sign up to play in several of the intramural leagues.
