Northern State University is based upon community, scholarship, and citizenship. Students at this
South Dakota School are connected to their community, engaged in intellectual endeavors, and upon graduation, ready to serve the world.
Located in Aberdeen, Northern State University is home to over 3,000 students. These students hail from more than 35 states and over 20 different countries.
The 72-acre campus is surrounded by trees and flowers. The 21 buildings border a center known to students as The Green. Students don't have to worry about bringing a car with them to Northern State University--everything on campus is within easy walking distance to downtown Aberdeen.
Northern State University offers over 35 majors and more than 40 minors. There are also six associate, eight pre-professional, and nine graduate degree areas for students to enroll in. Students can earn degrees at an associate, baccalaureate, or master levels. Associate and baccalaureate degree programs are in
arts and sciences,
business,
education, and
fine arts. Masters degrees are offered in education and E-learning. Northern State University is the only international
business program in South Dakota.
Sports and student activity are a part of life for students at Northern State University. There are hundreds of clubs and activities for students to get involved with and gain leadership skills. Some of these include professional clubs, religious groups, student-run publications, and campus government. The university is affiliated with the NCAA and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Preparing for life after college is an essential part to the college experience. Northern State University has a partnership with local employers to offer students the chance for employment while taking classes. An on-campus career center representative can meet with students to help them search for part-time employment off campus.

World War I had a mjor impact on Northern State University's campus. Approximately 452 students, faculty members, and alumni went to war and 13 gave their lives.
Aberdeen is the third largest city in South Dakota.
The mascot for Northern State University is the Wolves.
