Formed by a group of committed General Baptist pioneers, Oakland City University was formed in 1885. Following the motto of "Enter to Learn--Go Forth to Serve," this Indiana college wants to see that the gospel of Jesus is shown through education.

There are more than 650 students who attend the main campus in Oakland City and approximately 1,900 students who attend in all of the branches for Oakland City University. The student to faculty ratio is about 14 to 1. The campus is located on 34 acres of rolling hills in southern Indiana. Oakland City has a population of 3,000 and is rural farming community.

Oakland City University is divided into five schools: School of Adult and Extended Learning, School of business, School of Education, School of Arts and Science, and Chapman School of Religious Studies/Chapman Seminary. Some of the two-year associate degree programs include accounting, art, and religious studies. Examples of the four-year bachelor degree programs include biology, business, and art.

There are several clubs for students to participate in during their time at Oakland City University. Some of these include business groups, honor societies, and professional groups. Religious groups also play a main role on campus. The Student Christian Association was developed to create a spiritual atmosphere on campus for opportunities for worshipping and discussion. The Theologs is a group of students who are majoring in the School of Religious Studies. Its main intent is to develop connections to students entering a Christian career.

Classes just aren't taught at campus settings. Oakland City University has an extension center at the Branchville Correctional Facility, the Rockville Correctional Facility, the New Castle Correctional Center, Miami Correctional Facility, Madison Correctional Facility, and the Indiana Women's Correctional Facility. Prison inmates can earn an Associate in Applied Science in Human Services, Computer Technology, Food Service Management, or Business Administration. They can also earn a Bachelor in Applied Science in these same majors.
