Founded in 1833, Oberlin College is a powerhouse of the Midwest for its College of arts and sciences and a Conservatory of Music. For those who are academically and musically gifted, this Ohio College offers a five-year double-degree program, where students can earn both baccalaureate degrees.

There are approximately 2,800 students who attend Oberlin College (2,200 College of Arts and Sciences; 400 conservatory of music; 200 double degree). Approximately 85 percent of students who attend are out-of-state. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 11:1 (Arts and Sciences) and 8:1 (Conservatory of Music). Approximately 68 percent of classes have less than 20 students. Oberlin College has more than 270 full-time faculty members, 95 percent having earned the highest degree possible in their fields.

Located in Oberlin (pop. 8,600), about 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Oberlin was voted the best college town in the state, according to Ohio magazine. The campus is located on 440 acres.

It's a great place to hear music and performing arts on campus--there are more than 400 concerts and student recitals each year, along with 40 theater and dance productions, plus two operas each year. There are 120 student organizations, from student government to Frisbee teams. Sports teams also play a role on campus--with more than 20 varsity sports offered at an NCAA Division III level for men and women.

During the winter term (the entire month of January), students can study a subject more in-depth. This is also a great time for students to gain an internship. There's also the student-run Experimental College, which offers for-credit courses on anything from photography to women's health. Oberlin College students are encouraged to spend a semester abroad.
